How to Tell When Your Roof Needs Replacing

How often do you look at your roof? When deciding on a new home renovation, most homeowners do not even entertain the idea of a roof replacement because it’s somewhat undervalued. But the roof is such a crucial aspect of the house; it literally encompasses the entire top of the home. Let’s not forget that this one component is what shields us from the worst of what mother-nature throws. So, what are some of the key signs that a roof needs a makeover?

Cracked or Curled Shingles

The easiest way to tell if you are dealing with cracked or damaged shingles is to go outside and look at the slopes of your home in the sunlight. If you notice cracked or curled shingles, they could be the precursor to water damage, potential leaking or a sagging roof deck.

Are There Living Creatures on Your Shingles?

No, not squirrels—damaged shingles can lead to a collection of moisture, resulting in the development of moss or algae on your roof. This alone is not a major reason to be alarmed—it is mostly a cosmetic issue—but it is something that should be monitored, as it can be a sign of moisture collection.

Bald Spots where Granules are missing

Many issues can affect the condition of your granules: inadequately placed downspouts or poorly designed valley drainage are just a couple factors. As the granules are worn down, bare spots can begin to develop. These bare spots can grow into points for water to enter your home.
